JCVI Scientists Join NASA-Funded Astrobiology Research Teams
Scientists from J. Craig Venter Institute are part of teams awarded grants from NASA to “study the origins, evolution, distribution, and future life in the universe.” Dr. Christopher Dupont is part of a team led by the University of California, Riverside and will study chemical energy stored in rocks as a potential power source, while Dr. Shino Ishii will work with a team from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory looking at the habitability of extraterrestrial icy worlds. From...
NLM Selects Dr. Richard H. Scheuermann as Scientific Director for the National Library of Medicine
Patricia Flatley Brennan, RN, PhD, Director of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has named Richard H. Scheuermann, PhD, as NLM’s new Scientific Director following a nationwide search. Dr. Scheuermann is currently the La Jolla campus director at the J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI). He is expected to begin his role as NLM Scientific Director on September 10, 2023. “NLM is embarking on a bold new direction to optimize NLM’s vibrant...
JCVI Scientist Tackles Global Sanitation Challenges
Orianna Bretschger received her B.S. in Physics and Astronomy at the University of Northern Arizona. After a five- year career in aerospace and consulting, she completed a PhD in Materials Science at the University of Southern California. Eager to focus her efforts on alternative energy and sustainability, she joined the J. Craig Venter Institute in 2008. Over the course of her research tenure, Dr. Bretschger has established a productive team of researchers dedicated to understanding...
Viral Synthetic Genomics to Engineer Large dsDNA Viruses
Viruses with large double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) genomes are a diverse group, which includes members that can infect a wide range of different hosts. Some of these viruses are important pathogens of humans and animals. Improving our ability to manipulate their genomes rapidly and accurately will increase our understanding of how these viruses replicate and cause disease and the likelihood of developing vaccines. Utilizing synthetic genomics tools developed by scientists at the J. Craig...
Sequencing and analysis of genomic fragments from the NF1 locus.
The sequence of five non-contiguous genomic fragments encompassing 14.4 kilobases from the NF1 locus have been determined by fluorescence-based automated DNA sequence analysis. These fragments included one kilobase of the NF1 coding region, which resulted in the identification of the intron/exon boundaries of five exons. Based on these sequences, five new NF1 exon-PCR assays have been developed, that could be useful for detecting new NF1 mutations. The genomic sequences were analyzed for...
