Anders M. Dale, PhD

President
Professor, Multimodal Imaging & Genetics
Member, JCVI Board of Trustees

Anders Dale, Ph.D., is president, faculty, and board member of the J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI). Prior to joining JCVI, Dr. Dale was Professor of neurosciences, radiology, and data science at the University of California San Diego. He has also founded and led several AI-focused biotech startups. They include Cortechs.ai, Precision-Health.ai, and Precision-Pro.ai.

His research program is focused on the development and application of advanced techniques for acquisition and analysis of multimodal structural and functional imaging data, as well as the integration of quantitative imaging with genomic and health information for the prediction of health outcomes. This includes the FreeSurfer software package, which is used by more than 10,000 researchers around the world, and methods for probing tissue microstructure using diffusion MRI, with applications to improved detection and characterization of cancer in brain, prostate, breast, and other organs.

He has played a key role in the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) and is a PI of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) and Healthy Brain and Child Development Study (HBCD) studies, leading the imaging, analysis, informatics, and data sharing efforts of these $1B+ NIH funded initiatives. He is also leading the development and deployment of tools for polygenic 28 risk prediction and multimodal decision support in two large EU-funded Horizon 2000 initiatives, which involve federated analysis of data across biobanks and National health registries across Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Finland, and Estonia.

Dr. Dale has received numerous honors, including the Olav Thon Foundation Prize for Natural Sciences and Medicine, is a member of several boards and prestigious academic societies, and was recognized as one of the top ten most influential brain scientists of the modern era by Science magazine in 2016.
