CommentThis enzyme oxidizes protoporphyrinogen IX to protoporphyrin IX, a precursor of heme and chlorophyll. Bacillus subtilis HemY also has coproporphyrinogen III to coproporphyrin III oxidase activity in a heterologous expression system, although the role for this activity in vivo is unclear. This protein is a flavoprotein and has a beta-alpha-beta dinucleotide binding motif near the amino end.
